Aggborough Stadium – Kidderminster Harriers

Aggborough is a good well-equipped ground, with seated stands on either side and a sizeable covered terrace at each end. On one side is the Reynolds (Main Stand) Stand. This single tiered stand was built in 1994.Although it comprises just eight rows of seats, it appears much larger as it has quite a tall back wall at the back of the stand, the middle portion of which houses a glassed fronted executive area. The stand is covered and is free of supporting pillars. Incorporated into the seating area at the front of the stand are areas for each teams staff and substitutes. Opposite is the newer East Stand, which was opened in 2003. This single tiered, cantilevered stand, is quite smart looking and has greatly improved the overall look of the ground. Perspex panels have been incorporated into the front of its roof allowing sunlight to reach the pitch. Behind this stand can be seen puffs of white smoke from the steam trains running to and from the station, which certainly gives the ground a bit of character. Part of the East Stand is given to away supporters. Both ends are covered terraces, with the North Terrace being the traditional home end. The ground has a set of four tall modern looking floodlights.

The Club have unveiled plans to leave Aggborough and move to a new purpose-built stadium on the south western outskirts of Kidderminster, just off the A451 Stourport Road. If the scheme were to reach fruition then Aggborough would be sold to be redeveloped for housing.

Away fans are normally housed in the covered South Stand Terrace at one end of the ground, where around 1,500 supporters can be accommodated. In addition, a number of seats are also made available in the Bill Greaves East Stand, where the facilities are good. Adam Hodson a visiting Stockport County fan adds; ‘I sat in the Bill Greaves Stand which is a nice modern stand with a decent amount of leg room’. The food available at Aggborough is almost legendary; with the same company doing the catering there for over 50 years. The huge homemade cottage pies with gravy for £4.50 have often been voted the best in the league and be warned as the pie will probably take you most of the half time interval to eat! Almost in the same bracket as the pies is the Aggborough Soup, which at £1.50 is a bargain as it is almost a meal in itself. Cheeseburgers (£4), Burgers (£3.50) and Hot Dogs (£3.50) are also available

The ground generally has a good atmosphere, helped by the fact, that even a small number of supporters can make quite a noise from the covered terraces. I’ve always found Aggborough to be a pleasurable day out.

There is a supporters club at the ground, which allows away fans in, or behind the Reynolds Stand there is the Harriers Arms, a Sadlers pub, which shows Sky Sports, offers real ales and hot pies. However, for some high profile matches it reverts to home fans only. Otherwise, I would recommend a bar called the King & Castle located inside the Severn Valley Railway Station which is adjacent to Kidderminster mainline railway station. This pub serves an excellent range of local real ales including the locally produced Bathams Bitter, plus a range of pub snacks such as pork pies and proper cobs. Across the road from the station is another pub called the Railway Bell, which shows Sky Sports plus handily next door is a good chippy called the ‘Captain Cod’. Coming out of the railway station and passing the Severn Valley Railway Station on the left than little further down the hill on the same side is the Weavers Real Ale House. As its name suggests this small pub specialises in real ale and it serves cider and wine too (but no lager or spirits). On my recent visit it served a cracking pint!

There are also a number of pubs in the town centre including a Wetherspoons called the Penny Black. However, it is a good 15-20 minute walk away from the ground and it is mostly going uphill on the way back! If you do decide to walk into the town centre then there is another micropub on Oxford Street called the Beer Emporium, which is worth a visit, it is around a ten minute walk from Aggborough.

The trick to finding the ground is to follow signs for the ‘Severn Valley Railway’ (lots of steam trains if you are into that sort of thing!), which is well signposted. The ground is just behind the station.

From Birmingham, Wolverhampton and North (M5)
Leave the M5 at Junction 3. Take the A456 towards Kidderminster. On entering the outskirts of Kidderminster, turn left at the traffic lights at the junction with the A449, by the Land Oak Public House. Turn right at the next lights and proceed towards the town centre, passing the Severn Valley Railway Station on your left. Turn left into Hoo Road which is just before the roundabout. The ground is up this road on the left.

From Worcester and South (M5) Exit M5 at junction 6 (signposted A449) and follow towards Kidderminster (approximately 15 miles).  At first roundabout, take third exit (signposted A449, Kidderminster & Wolverhampton), then take first turning on left before railway bridge. Go down Hoo Road, over railway bridge, and Aggborough Stadium is on the right hand side.

From South-East (M40 & M42)
Leave M5 at junction 4 (signposted A491 Stourbridge). After approximately 5 miles, turn left onto A456 and follow towards Kidderminster.  At roundabout on Kidderminster Ring Road, take first exit (signposted A451 Stourport).  At next roundabout, take first exit (signposted A448 Bromsgrove), then take first turning on right into Hoo Road for the ground..

There are two fair sized car parks at the ground, but it can sometimes be difficult to get away quickly after the game. It is worth noting that the car park behind the away terrace costs £5 for cars and £10 for mini buses, whilst the car park behind the opposite home end costs £3. Otherwise you can also park at the nearby Severn Valley Railway station (£3).

The ground is walkable (10 minutes) from Kidderminster Railway Station, which is served by trains from Birmingham Moor Street. Just come straight out of the station and go past the Severn Valley Railway station on your left. Go down the hill and turn left into Hoo Road and the ground is up this road on the left.

Jon Hall adds; ‘A simpler route involves cutting through the old cattle market. In fact the ground can be seen from outside the front of the station. When leaving the train station head down Comberton Hill. Take the first left turn into Comberton Place (the empty Farmers pub is on the corner). Walk along Comberton Place, past the law courts on the left hand side, and head down an alley towards the ground. This alley brings you out at the bottom of the car park behind the home (north) terrace and near the Kidderminster Harriers Social and Supporters Club. The ground is clearly visible once you pass the law courts’.
