Broadwood Stadium – Clyde

Broadwood Stadium was opened in 1995, some nine years after the Club left their old Shawfield Stadium, which had been their home since 1898. Interestingly Shawfield is still in existence operating as a Greyhound Stadium. In the intervening years the Club ground shared with Hamilton and Partick Thistle, before moving to the new stadium. Broadwood Stadium has only three sides. The three stands are single tiered, having windshields to either side and are all seated and covered affairs. The size of the stands are roughly of the same height, although the Main Stand at one side of the pitch, is slightly taller than the other two. This stand has some enclosed corporate seating at the back. The North End of the ground is unused for spectators as it occupied by a leisure centre. On first glance I thought that this must be a prison as it is not exactly the most attractive of buildings and does nothing to enhance the stadium, quite the contrary in fact. The Club play on an artificial 3G pitch.

In a surprise move the Club have announced their intention to leave Broadwood. The Club who currently lease the ground, have advised their landlords that they intend not to renew the lease. Nothing definite has been announced as to where the Club may move to, but apparently a move to East Kilbride is being considered along with Glencairn Rutherglen, which is close to the old Shawfield Stadium.

Away supporters are housed in the Southern part of the Main (East) Stand at one side of the pitch. The view of the playing action, leg room and the facilities within the stand are both pretty good. Unfortunately this is the only stand open on matchdays, so atmosphere is somewhat drained by the outlook over an otherwise empty stadium and leisure centre. This stand is shared with home supporters.

The stadium has a reputation for being one of the coldest in Scotland, in fact some visiting fans have nicknamed the ground ‘Ice Station Broadwood’. Still if you need some central heating then the pies are pretty good. The atmosphere can be a bit flat at times, in an attempt to liven things up, if Clyde score, then ‘Dare’ by the Gorrilaz, blasts out around the ground. Crawford adds; ‘There are large windows along the side of the leisure centre, so the complex users can see what’s happening on the pitch when they are running on the tread-mill. This could be considered to be a a double form of torture!’

Ronnie Wallace, a visiting Airdrieonians supporter, informs me; ‘There is a Brewers Fayre pub/restaurant near to the ground off the Craiglinn roundabout, called the Broadwood Farm. There are other pubs in the neighbouring housing estate of Balloch however finding them (or finding your way back!) in the maze of pedestrian walkways can prove quite challenging’. Otherwise in the nearby village of Condorrat there is the Condorrat Arms pub. To find this pub from the front of the Broadwood Stadium go up to the roundabout and turn right, then left at the next roundabout. The pub is just on your left as you enter the village.

The ground is situated on the outskirts of Cumbernauld, just off the A80 Stirling Road. The ground is well signposted from the A80 and there is a good sized car park at the ground, albeit on wasteland at the back of it. Neil Wallace adds; ‘The car park is poorly signposted. At the “Broadwood Roundabout” by the stadium, take the turn off into the housing estate and follow road to the back of the stadium. It costs £2 to park there’.

The nearest railway station is Croy, which is about a 20 minute walk away from the Broadwood Stadium. This station is served by trains from Glasgow Queens Street.
